Tabulated Values

The wavelengths of the characteristic x-rays generated by the elements were looked up from Volume 4 of the, International Tables for X-Ray Crystallography, and were recorded in figure 3.

Because not all values for sub-transitions were listed, the average value for each transition type is entered, rather than the complete list. For example, for phosphorus, a values is given for the transition KM, but for iron, a value is given for each transition KM(ii), KM(iii), KM(iv),and KM(v). So the average value of the KM transitions were taken for iron and are plotted with the KM value given for phosphorus. The range of wavelengths for the sub-transitions never exceeds 5A (or 0.25 eV) so averaging should produce reasonable results.

In addition, transitions involving the N, O, and P energy levels are neglected because the probability of these transitions is extremely low (for K and L series) and the table does not contain a full listing of these transitions so the analysis would be incomplete.
